Huh, "East Germany" and "more humane"/"more liberal" aren't phrases that typically go together, based on the history I'd been taught growing up in cold war United States.
Most of what we're taught in this country about these countries was baseless propaganda, unfortunately.
Yeah, turns out that the old communist bloc actually did have actual communism in it sometimes
West German propaganda called the DDR a haven for perverts and deviants because there were gay bars and nude beaches
this was because west germany was largely ran by nazi functionaries who were allowed to keep their jobs if they chilled out about jews and roma a bit
Very cute of them while they were running a program to place foster children with known pedophiles. (Skeptical readers: look up Helmut Kentler on wikipedia) Swear to God it's like every time the bourgeois governments accuse communists of something, like clockwork, they're telling on themselves.
