Or to be more specific: I think it's a collective hallucination on the part of Millennials and Generation X. I'd never fucking heard of the comic until people started quoting from it on social media, and without fail every panel I've ever seen of it reads like an untreated concussion.

Yeah this is precisely the feeling it evoked when it was new, too. It's the point, really. It's doing it's job, so many years later.
I have known about the existence of Achewood for like fifteen years and in all that time I have -never- understood a single strip of that comic
I think it says something about Achewood's timeless appeal that 2010-2015 was well past its peak and yet people were still that devoted to it
Around the early 2010s was when I first started hearing about both achewood and homestuck and having never read either my mind just sort of folded them together into one thing like "oh that's that webcomic that's weird"
