there's nothing stopping from adding the new features without removing old features
so they're removing user tags and replacing them with usernames, and also adding display names. i assume your display name defaults to your username if you leave it empty, and your per-server profile display name defaults to your global display name if you don't change it
- they could easily just keep <name>#<number> tags the default unique identifiers. nothing about this changes. your account defaults to having only a tag
- they add @ usernames as an optional field to your account, for if you're weird and want to be """discoverable""" on discord or whatever. accounts that don't add this just won't be searchable by username, and will be semi-anonymous
- i guess this makes it so you can be either pinged as @<name>#<number> or @<username> not really a problem since both of those formats are mutually exclusive as long as usernames can't contain #
- EDIT: i think right now you can be @'ed as your server display name? so like, @'ing people is already an absolute mess
- they add the global display name. good addition. your DMs list will display this instead of user tags. this doesn't replace anything
but no its pretty obvious that like, these changes are not for improving user experience, they're doing this for future ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ ๐ถ๐ธ๐ท๐ฎ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฐ like selling "Discord Verified" or whatever stupid ideas they have
