so please give me your horror stories about why it's a bad idea so that those reasons embed themselves into my brain
(side note, you can also give me examples of "it's fine actually" because a balanced diet is good for me, I Guess??)

i live on existing instance, but for second-hand info, one of my partners spends a Lot of time putting stuff in their firewall to keep freaks away, and the other posts exclusively on 🔒. so
yeah it's like... do i want to be a sysadmin and content moderator For Free on top of existing like normal??? my only motivation would be to have a custom domain name and css for aesthetics LMAO
(also as an aside, hey same instance!)
yeah! i didn't know you were even on there until immediately after posting this and seeing it in your bio lol
it's why i need to be stopped!!! i would gain funny username but probably give myself a ton of Work lol
my experience with mastodon mainly happened with snouts.online so when things broke the way they did (ie admin "Drama" led to almost all the staff quitting and one admin going mad with power and becoming a dictator before finally taking the whole instance down) that was more than enough to put me off the small instance model
if you were just hosting it for yourself and maybe people you directly personally know maybe it would be manageable. but if you start opening it up to friends of friends, and friends-of-friends-of-friends, then the amount of responsibility and power you have over admin and moderation and content policy and those people's data is just, certainly not something i would take on even if somebody paid me lmao
even now there's still dust from snouts.online burning down... permanent mark on mastodon for a lot of people who got their account deleted in the fallout...
i would be hosting only for myself, and also i trust myself (lol), the thing i'd be concerned with would be the ever growing requirement to fix random crashes, keep up with updates, block nazi instances, maybe deal with DDOSes... not that i'd be big enough for that but like, i feel like it's gonna happen, and it's gonna suck when it happens
definitely is wise in the world of online to assume that any Bad Shit or malicious attacks or exploitable vulnerabilities will happen sooner or later and be prepared for it... sysadmin scarey
