it feels like this terminology (in tech circles) originates from the crypto bro NFT circles which is where i personally saw it for the first time, though i think it originates from like, the dumb limited time fashion stuff like Supreme which calls their releases "drops" too?? i think????

it's stupid and originates from communities with toxic mindsets and we had a perfectly good word for releasing things already

I guess my main association with the term is from stuff like fortnite and gacha lootboxes, and twitch using it (to try) to be cute about it being "loot drops." Honestly not that great as origins either, "release" really is the better word.
