Mankind is at war with the Strogg, a hostile alien race planning an invasion of Earth. In response, we launched a preemptive strike...it failed. Outnumbered and outgunned, you must fight to shut down the enemy's war machine. Only then will the fate of humanity be known.

It wasn't a "preemptive strike". The Strogg went to Earth and fucked our shit up. We just happened to survive long enough to reverse engineer their technology and fly back to their homeworld to kick their asses.

  • The game manual covers this.

  • The intro cinematic covers this.

  • Quake Wars lets you actually play through the Earth invasion (albeit as a class-based team multiplayer game).

Someone really phoned in the summary for this thing, and maybe i shouldn't be as irritated as i am but this game was a huge part of my youth and it's kinda baffling to me how someone can get a summary so dead-ass wrong for a game that barely has a story at all

@gabu

now see, i never actually knew anything about the story of the quake games, so i started reading their wikipedia pages, and...

Quake II takes place in a science fiction environment. In the single-player game, the player assumes the role of a Marine named Bitterman taking part in "Operation Alien Overlord", a desperate attempt to prevent an alien invasion of Earth by launching a pre-emptive attack against the home planet of the hostile Strogg civilization.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_II#Plot

did the store page just take the summary from wikipedia? or did wikipedia take the plot from the store page summary???

Huh, that's a real chicken vs egg question right there as I only just noticed this when the Korean ratings leak listed the summary as this, which is... It's incorrect.

The WP page at least gets the name of the military operation right. It's also the first id FPS to have a named protagonist, mentioning his name in both the intro cinematic, writing his name on the drop pod you start the game next to, and being reinforced later in Quake 3 as a playable character.
