The fact we're now getting "highly authentic" collections of Bubsy and Gex just shows cashing in on ironic fandom has gone way too far. We have to make sure no one buys these so we can nip the whole thing in the bud

if you want to release new bubsy/gex you have to transcend their original releases

you've gotta let them grow from their regrettable 1990s origins

you've gotta let them make out with each other sloppy style in a mainstream video game release and don't pull your punches

Finally: you can play one Perfectly Average 2D platformer, and also some much worse games. Are you excited to spend $40 plus shipping and wait nine months to get it yet

Oh sorry, that was about Bubsy, not Gex. Gex honestly had a higher hit rate than Bubsy did

Edit: And I don't actually care if you were going to buy it, sorry if that came across aggressive. I just meant that the value proposition for paying for a physical Bubsy collection feels... low.

The thing is, Bubsy -the concept- absolutely deserves a ton of behind the scenes interviews, concept art, the works. A lot about its development has been revealed via social media and the original creators don't deny what they created. On that front, I'd love to see something that shows the history behind the character.

On the OTHER hand... this just means more people might get to experience Bubsy 3D.

And the evil side of me is extremely giddy at seeing people SUFFER through that game and immediately regret buying this collection.

Let them suffer, Misty. That is what the people preordering this desire.

Hahahaha. You know what, that's fair. Just picturing people's ironic fandom withering as they have to experience Bubsy 3D the object instead of just Bubsy 3D the abstract concept

I did too! I never played any of the later ones, and I gather that's the problem - the first game is a perfectly Medium platformer (not bad, not great) but then every game after that was worse than the one before it.

Feels like a response to the shrinking limited print market. Gotta start actually commissioning and publishing original stuff and collections if you can't maintain your whole business around physical runs of existing games

My favorite detail of the "Limited Run using CD-Rs for 3DO" thing is that they used CD-Rs for D, the cult game that probably only extreme never-opening-this collectors were buying anyway. BUT for Plumbers Don't Wear Ties, the meme game, they made sure they didn't use CD-Rs for that. That kind of encapsulates how I feel about these fomo retro re-releases.

The first two Bubsy games can be purchased on Steam for extremely cheap. Five bucks, I think (it's about $3ish in local currency.) Piko used to own the rights, then that got shuffled off to another company, then... the current shambling corpse of Atari got it with a bunch of other Accolade stuff.

Current Atari isn't really very pro-preservation, but they're very much pro-making money out of everything they own, so I doubt they'll let LRG sit on manufacturing the physical copy for too long.
