thats fair! to each their own of course!!
my irritation stems from being sensitive to notification sounds/vibrations/popups grabbing my attention and making me lose my focus. however there are cases where someone legitimately wants my attention (DMs, @-ing me to pull me into a relevant conversation i'm not already in, ping on a reply to a message i sent over an hour ago), and in those cases i WANT a ping!
so yeah! you're right! when someone talks to you, you want to get a notification
what i hate is when your attention is already ON that person or that conversation (like illustrated in my post) and yet because people reply (with notify on) to a message in a conversation you're actively having, you have to deal with a bunch of buzzing and notifications popping up on your phone, a bunch of sounds happening. for things you're actively looking at right that moment
the other half of my post is that replying to something that just happened really really clutters the chatlog and it becomes hard to read. everyone is replying to the same message (that just happened) so its not needed for clarity (like when two conversations are happening through eachother), and the constant repeats of "in reply to....." makes it hard to read
okay that ended up a lot longer than necessary lol..... well anyway: tl;dr: pings when you're offline is good, pings when you're online is bad, imo
