once again thinking about how massive end-of-the-world threats in fiction are so common and, imo, over-done in corporate media. not everything needs to be an ultimate threat
I've sort of speculated that the most powerful people find these to be the only thing threatening - and therefore compelling - in fiction, because they're the only things that could affect them (besides revolution and accountability, but they find those uncomfy and avoid those topics like the plague). 'who cares about shit like-' checks notes '-some random poor people, amirite?'
so like, of course disney wants to make movies where like, humanity is under threat by vicious aliens or some shit. they don't want to pretend they give a fuck about 'those who are beneath them'. of course they want viewers to focus on threats to the institutions of power instead of empathising with people who don't have the hoards of money to get themselves out of any problem... because as soon as you empathise with them as individuals and as communities, you realise that maybe the rich and powerful have been the villains all along
idk, just random thoughts. give me more 'low' stakes in fiction
