This function is bigger on one side. That's what it is, a function that's unbalanced. It's often used in integral convolutions, where it acts like a weighting function in a weighted sum.
I spent years believing the name of the function references the fact that it's heavy on one side. Nope.
It's named after its inventor, Oliver Heaviside.
I can't get over this.
