I know at least one of you has worked out how to draw a spiky speech bubble with pure CSS. Any tips? (Irregular shape not required, just adding spikes to the outside of a rectangle is perfect.)

With complex shapes or pictograms, don't forget to look at Unicode as a tool in the shed. There's, like, a lotta shit over there. For example, the Unicode symbol for an explosion, "πŸ’₯." This is pretty spiky-looking.

Scaling this up is straightforward. Because it's vector-based, it should be resilient to stretching. Basic transformations leave it pretty legible.

πŸ’₯πŸ’₯

You can give it a stronger outline by putting some text-shadow on it. Here, I've added four shadows in different directions to give it outlines everywhere.

πŸ’₯

This does seem to stick you with having the inside of your POW! speech bubble be colorful. I hope that's what you wanted. Someone with actual expertise might be able to knock the hole out of the middle of the shadow, but that's beyond me.
