which is a yuri eroguro VN with some of the most appropriately blood-curdling screams i've ever heard in a work, so if you're not good with that i recommend not playing it. also i'll be mentioning some spoilers here, so, you know
anyway, it's really good! holy shit! it's one of those really short works that manages to succintly communicate the appeal and possibility space of what it's working with. here, everything coheres perfectly into a story about the depths the dehumanization oppressed peoples are forced to endure, and how they might or might not find reprieve from it.
the way the guro contributes to this is pretty obvious, but what i was most surprised by was the comedy (which is actually legitimately funny)! like, it's one thing for the villains to callously torture the protagonists, but for them to say really goofy and stupid shit while doing so? that's when you realize that it's not that they think they're above the girls; rather, they don't even see them as human in the first place. and oh boy, do some of the ways they're not seen as human remind me of the ways power structures have materialized in the real world, huhhhh
and speaking of power structures, with shizuha and yuika the game also demonstrates a keen awareness of what their purpose actually is. do the hunters actually care about protecting the world from the evil of vampires? no, of course they don't. shizuha is the most innocent vampire ever, having willingly starved herself because she doesn't want to hurt humans, and they torture her all the same. it's all about having power over others, baby!! yuna and shizuha understand this (though to a limited extent); the three stooges understand this, and revel in this power they have as a distraction from how much they hate their lot; and yuika... is the only one who doesn't, who seriously thinks she's fighting for the greater good. and it's very interesting to me that her ignorance is seemingly what the game is least forgiving of... even this supposedly-Good job doesn't bring her any joy, and for both buying into the oppressors' rhethoric and being a traitor to her fellow women she gets some of the most horrible bad ends.
honestly, i'm in awe that this game manages to have such clear and pointed commentary while being only ~5 hours long and made by 2 people... and uh, being a b-horror vampire story with a lot of hardcore torture porn lol. you can really tell that ban'ya and metawo have been in the industry for a while, and i'm very interested in playing more of blackcyc's stuff in the future.
