i've heard Bluesky has Main Characters of the Day like Twitter did (does?). one of their recent ones was someone who said it wasn't ok to make jokes about 9/11, because that's what everyone was yelling about that day

the whole website descended upon them to wreak some sort of vengeance. they were no one in particular, saying nothing much at all and the twitterbrained power users weren't just gonna let that happen

seems exhausting, frankly! don't know why anyone wants this experience!

i was a Main Character of the Day on Twitter once, possibly twice depending on how u look at it. but that one time was horrible. thousands of people treating me like a communal punching bag for the crime of... being emotionally vulnerable to the point of "being cringe", which is the worst crime you can do online

i felt fucking disgusting for participating in previous Main Characters' public floggings and it soured me on the whole Twitter experience for good. but some people want more of that on a website where they explicitly allow hate speech and shit? i really don't get it

that's 100% a thing, I've haven't seen much of it because I don't follow the Big Terminally Online Accounts there (which is also why the site is "boring" but that's another issue) but it's definitely happening lol

in reply to @nicky's post:

The vibe I get on bluesky is that all the people who liked the "main character" thing on Twitter decided to get together on the new site and just kind of agreed that they'd reach accept a small chance of being the victim so they could keep playing pile-on. There are other people there but absolutely that's a big community

I think this was kinda baked in insofar as the core appeal of bluesky was "we can have pre-musk twitter again", and for all that it was obviously better before he had it, it still was twitter

eugh i definitely remember a couple of ppl i follow specifically citing that as a reason to stick around/wanting that for their new platform and like… idgi at all. esp if it feels as forced as that sounds

It is tricky, since sometimes "dunking on the main character of the day" feels righteous. Like the DeSantis's campaign's very silly football play diagram, or "that guy who hoped Oppenheimer would inspire people to become physicists". I imagine people are simply chasing that feeling.
