maybe my NA-centric existence influenced my ignorance but i had no idea the term "fifi" even existed up until now. "no fifies," for others not in the know, means "no effeminate men."
and if i hadn't seen the sign dating itself at 1996 i would have assumed it came straight out of the late 1800's. remarkable.
edit: also, "drescode."
Pretty sure it's a pluralization of "fifi" which was old slang term for effeminate men and somewhat later but still like 80 years ago a slur for gay men. So very relevant in uh, 1996. Cool.
But also it turns out a Fifie is a style of Scottish sailing boat so I prefer to think that the establishment just hated Scottish boats.
I'm mentally changing that year to 1896 and then it makes more sense
