The complaints that Personal Area Networks never really practically became a thing, and that the Internet of Things is a shitshow, are at root the same complaint:
that corporations pervasively refuse to sell devices and technologies to you unless they're weaponised against you out of the box and can't be stopped.
Your devices don't form a PAN because they would answer to you that way. Without a round-trip to at least one corp-controlled spyware server on every button push, how would they get their money's worth out of taking your money?
