The Knick is a great show because it just revels in reminding you how bad the early 20th century was. Somebody will be like, this orphan needs to get back to their job, and you go "oh no!" and they put the kid in a cab and tell the driver, take her to the triangle shirtwaist factory and you go "OH NO!!"

there is a lot of "things used to be real bad" media but the Knick hits in a very specific way because it's like: here is somebody with a medical condition you know is no big deal in the modern day, they are now going to die horribly from the best doctors of 1900 doing unhinged shit.
the Knick is like one of those medical podcasts where you learn about a psychiatrist who believed the road to mental health involved pulling out all of a person's teeth but it's 100 times more visceral because it's unexpectedly happening to a character in the story you've been watching
