More Leviticus! This section was mostly further discussion of the rules for sacrifices, with special attention to the rules governing what parts and when the priests may apportion and eat the sacrifices. This is all followed by Moses gathering the Israelites and performing a number of sacrifices as well as ordaining Aaron and his sons as priests. Not too exciting a chapter, but it does include some laws concerning kashrut, such as the prohibition on eating suet (we didn't realize that was a thing) and blood. Interestingly, per Rashi the blood of fish and locusts is not included in this rashi fish locust blood This section led us down a rabbit hole on the kosher rules for suet, substitutes (schmaltz), and a surprise guest appearance from Mary Douglas of Purity and Danger fame mary douglas on suet Afterwards, we also discussed some trans interpretations of various Jewish figures that came up due to recent work from the Trans Halakah Project, during which we learned various cool and important facts about Rabbi Yochanan, universally agreed beauty and possible trans woman, such as how beautiful they were, that men thirsted for them, and how large their dick may have been yochanan dick facts

In conclusion, change of vestments

We continue again with the sacrifices of sin, ordination, meals, well-being, and the actual ordination of Aaron and his sons by Moses. Some return to the discussion here of who is allowed to eat what and how that fits into the questions of cleanliness that were much more pressing for Levites and priests who were regularly consuming holy things; some discussions of biology and how animals are physically put together; and some other things besides. Honestly, it wasn't a super involved night between a small group and the focus of this portion being very procedural.

Most of the talk came around to some background discussions between things like broader discussions of kashrut and how cleanliness does and doesn't fit into modern conceptions of stuff like sanitation; the difficulties of translations; and what it means to engage with a text on its own terms. We've got a couple people exploring conversion, so it's always worth digging into!

Alas, no clips from the sages tonight :eggbug-pensive:

we were looking up various vessels of the described sizes and really trying to figure out how we were supposed to measure them because like. surely they aren't that big, surely there's some kind of trick to how these are being measured, But Also, I support Yochanan whether their dick is huge or not.

My wife has been doing a lot of reading in Mary Douglas (her more recent work 2004 maybe, not Purity and Danger, which of course she's already read) and Jacob Milgrom, it's really a fascinating look at the this stuff. I'm as excited as ever to be back studying Leviticus
