Oh, shit, I thought it was a bit of a shitchost so I gave a shitchost comment!

I don't know if RPGMaker is the best bet off the bat, because 'RPG' is such a nebulous genre.

AFAIK (newer versions might be more versatile) RPGMaker began as a top-down final-fantasy-one-thru-six-style JRPG maker. ATK-ITM-MGK menus, etc. Again, didn't stop people making all kinds of wild games with it, and it's long since increased in versatility, but the real question is thus:

What kind of RPG do you want to make? The more specific you are, the better an idea of what engine you'll want to spend your time learning (or, like some absolute bonkers folks, making yourself.)

What kind of camera angle/control do you want the player to have, if any?

What kind of interactions are your main focus? Is it a card game? An oldschool combat JRPG? Some kind of real time ARPG? World-level based, or open world, or some mix or such?

There are a fair few questions you'll generally wanna have an idea about the answer to (and likely already do, just by way of even having a general idea), before you choose what you want to pour your time into.

If I had to pick one out of a hat with LITTLE TO NO EXPERIENCE ON MY END (gods please dont get angry at me people i am not a solo dev), Unity does seem to be the accessible engine-of-choice for even solo devs, and I've no doubt there's some good (even free!) marketplace assets you could use as a framework to get set up. (Like, default menus, a basic character/level/XP system, a mode of interaction like first/third/topdown player motion, etc etc etc).

I hope that's more helpful than my previous answer!

I don't know if people get notifs for being at'd, but @damon and @hthrflwrs are both professional gamedevs with a shittonne of experience in many different areas of gamedev, and even on their worst days would likely give more trustworthy and useful suggestions and advice than I.

no worries, it was a pretty vague question anyway! those are some good questions to ask. my idea is pretty traditional as far as turn based rpgs (persona 3 but with wrestlers) so I guess rpg maker could work? looking around a bit I'm thinking godot might be something to try since it seems a little more robust and is FOSS which im a little freak for. thanks for the info, I appreciate it!
