I woke up to this message I forwarded to the 7726 spam reporter AND got a call suspected of being spam WHILE figuring out how to forward the message to report it. lmao. scammers are all like "GONE PHISHING" today. Sheesh.

that sucks a whole lot. i'm kinda wondering if there is a shady "input a mailing address, get a phone number" service out there that scammers use that gets them a viable new target ~90% of the time.

i'm pretty sure i Have gotten roughly those scam texts without having sent packages in ... i honestly don't remember the last time

almost all of them get auto spam filtered tho i think i've only seen one or two get presented to my unflagged

so there might be an alternate angle if your phone is doing spam filtering and also is aware somehow you sent a package so is more open to texts claiming to be from usps? not sure if that's likely or — if it is — if it's less worrying

I’ve gotten those without sending a package, so I think it might just be a huge coincidence.

The message doesn’t say whether it was being sent to you or from you, just that it was in transport, so it plays off as a cold reading type thing to hedge bets on a bunch of scenarios:

“I was expecting something, so I need to fix it.”
“I sent something, so I need to fix it.”
“I didn’t know somebody was sending me something, so I need to fix it.”

I get these all of the time but for 'Amazon Packages' or 'Lowes' (Never Home Depot) But they're usually email, not text. I got a few of those texts around Christmas which is a great time for a package spam. I imagine following the link will eventually lead to inputting CC info?

i think it is actually just a coincidence, i almost never get packages and have gotten a whole shitload of these texts. even more if you count stuff that gets spam filtered, so yeah

at least i sure hope that's what's going on

in reply to @ghoulnoise's post:

my best guess is these just get sent out to whoever, regardless of whether they actually shipped a package recently. it's just a common enough action that they hope to catch someone off-guard who did in their wide net. the alternative is quite spooky, but i figure it's no different than like, paypal scams in your spam email folder that reach you whether or not you even have a paypal

Yeah, one similar to that almost got me shortly after I ordered something and my bleary eyed morning brain was slow to process the fact that my order hasn't shipped yet.

At least the Canada Post url is very distinctive.
