Sewing Project no. 1 (post no. 2)

I am planning to do a panel of smocking at the back of this garment like what is here on this Frankenstein top I've worn too much since I got it a few years ago. It's super comfy and non-restrictive because of the give it has from the shirring.

I've done shirring before, for this purple popsicle dress I made back in... 2015. Which, before the pajamas I made last month, was the last thing I sewed for myself. I need to get this dress back eventually (stored with family).

You basically take a piece of fabric around 1.5 to 2 times wider than you need (kinda depends on fabric type and other factors), use elastic thread in the bobbin, sew with an interlocking stitch in parallel lines. There are about a million tutorials out there on it, it's very easy to do!

I'm hoping the stretch fabric I ordered for the rest of the fabric is a good shade match for the black muslin fabric I may use for this shirred section. We will see! Otherwise, I'll need to find a slightly more substantial cotton fabric.

  1. Someone is helping me start flat patterning
2. started with the strap because it's the easiest part.
  • rectangle!
  • 1cm of seam allowance built in!
  • 1 1/4" thick straps!
  • cut on the fold!
  • length follows the grain!
3. Probably all I'm doing tonight but I also got the waistband loosely figured out. It's pretty wide because I'm gonna do some light (horizontal) rouching.

I'll probably go ahead and cut these both out of the fabric so I can pin them to the dress form and measure the bodice since it's more complex. I think my fabric comes tomorrow, even! Probably going to sew a muslin version first (and if it also turns out wearable than that's a bonus!)

~edited to combine my three posts from tonight! gonna do this as a continuous tag rather than a thread since it gets a little much on my page when they stack!~
