Allied Employees Guild Improving Sega (AEGIS), a new union at Sega of America, has just filed for a union election with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) as it looks to become the United States's first multi-department video game union. They are and will be affiliated with the Communications Workers of America, who have been spearheading the charge to unionize tech workers and video game workers in recent years.
The union is claiming the support of a supermajority of the 144 workers it looks to cover; although this has sometimes faltered as a future indicator of victory (think NYC Trader Joe's this week) it bodes well and suggests this effort will be successful. Given its strength of position, the union is hoping for voluntary recognition from SEGA (although to be cynical I cannot imagine this is forthcoming).
The Verge has more gritty details and I'd encourage you to read their article on this and the process of organizing the union:
Of particular note beyond pay: a substantial number of workers don't have full-time status (even after years of working for the company) and lack employment benefits such as paid time off as a consequence. That's a big thing the union is hoping to change with its first contract.
