Along Ryōgoku--home of the famous Ryōgoku Kokugikan--there is a whole lot of sumo-related public art. This statue is one of my favorites.
It is of a Yokozuna (sorry did not get the name) doing the iconic ring-entering ceremony in Shinarui style. Both arms are outstretched, symbolizing an aggressive two-handed attack.
You can feel his strength and power.
Contrast it with this statue of the Unryu style, one arm outstretched and one arm in. The arm in represents a shield or a hand ready to block. This is a combination style, representing a focus on both offense and defense.
note: during the ceremony the arms are slowly raised, hence the first statue having arms down and this statue having their arm up. They're the same ceremony, just different times in the motion.
