i want modern games that feel like 3D DOS games. i want DOStalgia. i want 320x200 VGA vibes, even if it's not literally that resolution. i want big chunky textures on giant triangles that wobble. i want a window into a 3D world surrounded by thick borders with gameplay-relevant UI that's drawn like a painting. i want noisy FM synthesis. i want it all

the other day Daria was showing me Pathways Into Darkness on the aleph one source port and I learned that it does not surround the player view with 5 actual OS windows containing info on your inventory and status displayed via normal GUI widgets and I angrily demanded to know why one would bother playing at that point. I was not doing a bit

I feel like this kind of thing is why I enjoy Lethal Company's visuals so much. It has that classic 256 color palette feel and the chunky depth of field compression at distance that just feels like a weird 3D video FMV background all the time.
