honestly i forgot it was a thing until i was browsing tvtropes (I JUST LIKE BROWSING THROUGH IT LIKE WIKIPEDIA) and came across it again. and like. holy fuck i didn't know that A: it was going until 2019(?!) and B: it ended

and all i can say is: wow, it has aged... questionably.
the acting is wooden at best, plot points appear and disappear at the drop of a hat, there's some kind of uncomfortable moments and it has just not held up all that well, especially when compared to stuff like marble hornets.

the main villain (that isn't slenderman, who barely makes any appearances late in the story and doesn't really have much of a bearing on the plot) is what can only be described as "tumblr sexyman bait", a mix of the joker, bill cipher and every snarky villain in a cartoon ever. every scene he's in feels like watching an awkward kid pretend to be the joker and it's kind of embarrassing to watch after a while. he even wears a fedora in multiple scenes... eugh.

(spoilers below the bit)

the ending is just. eh? it feels flaccid. there's a really awkward fight that ends in a stock sound effect and a crappy camera shake, there's no tension and it just feels unfinished and amateur. it doesn't really feel like it has a climax, instead it just kind of sputters out.

the plot point about HABIT being able to summon creatures to film himself is interesting, but it also feels really weird? like. why does he need the EMH crew if he can just summon creatures? are there limitations to his summoning? it's never really explored. there's definitely an interesting story idea about a megalomaniac killer who records his crimes or supernatural cameramen, but EMH doesn't really do anything with it.

speaking of things EMH doesn't do anything with: steph! where did she go?! i know her actor moved, but she just completely disappeared from the plot. she was set up to be an important character and then she just... pops out of existence. i barely remember any mention of her near the end of the series and the last episode, which has a lot of cameos by previous characters, just doesn't have her show up at all. which feels kinda bad. could have done some fucky time shit, have her replaced by a different actor and go "oo its the weird dimension stuff" but they just... removed her from existence.

idk, there's definitely a lot of interesting ideas, but they don't go anywhere. it feels really lethargic and boring.
