the game has changed significantly but stayed the same in many ways. the new client is both a complete overhaul of the last one but also the entire imvu experience. its got a lot more "going on" performance-wise that could give your computer a hard time.
however, imvu DOES still offer the old experience, both the website and the desktop app, and since those are of course made for older computers it could run notably better for you if you go that route. the only reason i don't is because for me the client has some sort of unfixable scaling issue.

however, i don't know if i can really recommend you pick up imvu again. most of the social groups that made the game worth playing are gone, for instance i always hung out with furries, ravers, and emos, none of which are prominent parts of the playerbase anymore. that doesn't mean there are none, but i certainly haven't spoken to one since 2017.
i really only log in to dress up and check things out, i rarely even bother talking to anyone anymore. granted, if i could get the classic version working, i would probably be playing walk-off all the time, but still.
imvu is not and has never been the best game. i have a very specific attachment to it that keeps me there, but i doubt a new player would have an amazing experience unless you're looking to purchase a getup that says "Dxddy's Little Monster" and log into ~♡Adults Room ,18+ AV♡~
