See, I know that historically the Necrons are the ones poised as the thematic rivals to the Mechanicus because of their whole 'desire to regain flesh' thing, but I think the 'nids are an even better thematic rival.
While the Mechanicum is like the last place in the Imperium where new thoughts aren't immediately blammed down for being heresy, they are still forced to exist solely to maintain their ancient formerly impressive technological advances to serve the bloated mess of the fascist empire that occupies them. To the direct contrast of this is the tyranids, who don't seem to serve anything at all besides their consuming instinct/hivemind, and are constantly morphing and evolving their bodies to do so.
Imagine being a scientist forced to keep churning out flintlocks while the space bugs across the street are making newer and more badass lasers out of their arms everyday. You'd maybe want to worship them, too.
