If the farmer were simply bigger, which is the correct option, he could put the cabbages (or grain or whatever) in his pocket, and carry the fox (or wolf, I guess) and the goat (or sometimes it's a sheep?) in either hand, all in one trip! Actually, it'd be way quicker to just walk the whole way like that. C'mere, we're going to the market.
