something not mentioned in this writeup (perhaps because it might come across as a little punchy-downy) is that the voice acting is charmingly awful on a whole different vector to the authentic HOD games—instead of first-take no-effort reads from whichever foreigner happened to be in the office that day, you get constant overactive patter written and performed by people who aren't especially fluent in English, so aside from a lot of awkward phraseology, you get really odd non-direction like wizened old sorcerers whose every line is delivered with the cadence of a '70s gameshow host, etc etc

BTW, Sega Shanghai's headed up by Makoto Uchida, one of the main creative forces behind games like Altered Beast and Golden Axe: back in the mid-'90s, when it became clear to everyone involved that Sega Technical Institute was floundering, they sent Uchida over there to essentially teach the remaining staff how to make games, and after a few fruitful titles (Die Hard Arcade/Dynamite Deka 1 & 2, Alien Front Online), they sent him to Shanghai to see if he could work the same magic... unfortunately, Sega Shanghai never found the same success, and according to Uchida, one of the big hurdles that persists to this day is constant headhunting that makes it impossible to build an internal culture or develop the skills of the staff over successive game because people are constantly disappearing without notice, which is obviously bad for any project but especially detrimental to anything created or spearheaded internally. They did at least reach a point where they were able to make original licensed games for the international arcade business (they did the Mission Impossible light gun game from a couple years back), but I have no idea if they're even still doing that nowadays, given that Sega Amusements bought themselves out and all.
