that someone cracked GG Aleste 3 and put the rom on CD Romance. It's just horrible that anyone can simply download the best game of the 2020s, which was made by Manabu Namiki and Kazuyuki Nakashima of Battle Garegga and Armed Police Batrider fame, and play it on their MiSTer, or their Pocket, or any device of their choosing, for free. It's simply an outrage that one of the best shooting games, no, one of the best action games, nay, one of the best video games ever made is now available for anyone, for the cost of a few clicks and googles, to play whenever they please.

A shame I say

For what it's worth, this news got back to the developers very quickly and their president responded by taking the prospect of an official cartridge release off the table. One would have thought it'd have happened by now if it was ever going to happen, but what do I know.

I'm not especially concerned about piracy but I do think it's silly that, because the game was developed to vintage spec, certain people feel it ought to be handled and discussed within the framework of vintage software preservation. It's a 2020 game!

For most games I'm suspicious that piracy actually hurts sales, and for this game in particular, which requires one to, sight unseen, make a second eShop or PSN account, find a way to put funds in it, and download it through a marketplace they probably can't read, and which comes with a load of bells and whistles that by their nature are not included in the Game Gear rom, I would be shocked if the existence of this cracked rom doesn't actually help sales.

With that, I think M2's decision to remove a potential avenue for purchase because some one found a way to crack it slightly baffling.

Their prior shottrigger games bombed over here sales wise and thats why aleste and such never came west: it was already gonna be a niche risk to localize and bring it out and as rad as this game is the crack probably just makes m2 go “well fuck the few westerners who might buy a localization or real cart just no longer will now” so i can definitely understand why M2 just called it off

Toaplan Arcade is only happening because of LRG/Embracer and I honestly dont see that selling well either especially with how LRG stuff doesnt do well with MOQ already. I love M2’s work and proudly import their sets but their viability is very niche to the average western consumer…

Yeah, it's kind of weird that people treat these like 90s games to be added to ROM sets in a particular way and not, like. A modern game.

That said, I really doubt this was going to significantly cut into sales of a physical copy. Cancelling a release based on this feels weird.
