(not one of the many promised content updates, mind, but a version of the patch the PC build got in the first week, however months ago that was now:)

  • Added Options in the Pause Menu.
  • Added customizable button layouts in the Options.
  • The button layout changes now save properly in the Tutorial.
  • Changed Fool's attack pattern.
  • Adjustments to numbers of lines sent by the enemy in duels.
  • Fixed the drops counter on the end screen after the match.
  • Path of Destiny - changed the probability of drawing items.
  • Path of Destiny - Items now activate automatically.
  • Path of Destiny - modified the roulette chances for losing a challenge.
  • Other minor bug fixes, translation adjustments, and game stability improvements.

It came and went with zero buzz, even among vs. puzzle fanatics, but yes, a new Magical Drop game came out on PC & Switch earlier this year courtesy of Forever Entertainment, producers of many recent, tepid remakes of classic games like Panzer Dragoon, The House of the Dead and Front Mission, with more to come (as in, more games in each of those series, but also Night Slashers, Fear Effect, Shadowgate and probably others I'm forgetting).

This one's a sequel, for whatever difference it makes, and while it clears the incredibly low bar set by the barely-functioning Magical Drop V, I can't really recommend it on any level—putting aside the many issues that I figure will eventually be addressed (the many inanities of the single-player mode and the associated busywork required to access all the content , the UI/matchmaking issues that make it virtually impossible to find random games online, the many other bugs and technical oversights), it's completely bereft of ambition or iteration beyond being a theoretical new client for multiplayer matches, and it's not even adequate for that purpose. They had their one shot to maybe pull some people away from Fightcade and they blew it. Oh well.

Nope, no Ghostlop or 4-player, or any other big attempts at mechanical innovation... the versus mode lets you play with either "Friendly" or "Competitive" rules, with Friendly being their (not-especially-balanced) retune that you're forced to use for all the single-player modes, and Competitive being a straight reproduction of MD3, minus whatever errors they made.
