what properties does S-E still own that might plausibly be able to AAA-ify and have it actually take... like, didn't they recently sell 'em all?

something I appreciate about modern S-E is that they're the one big legacy JP studio that's really put their money where their mouth is when it comes to gambling on smaller-budget games, so I'm sad some absolute knucklehead seems to have convinced them that their future should entail pouring more money into fewer projects (and not just because they've demonstrably tried and failed at that approach many times over)

Didn't they recently complain that basically all their mid-tier games released last year underperformed? I guess this is the conclusion they came to. It'll fail, probably spectacularly, so let's see what comes after this new strategy.
At least a AAA 3D Worldrunner game will be interesting to see.

I feel like I heard something to that effect, but one would hope that the response to those results would not be "fewer games, bigger budgets" and would instead be "don't release three broadly-similar SRPGs back-to-back"

fwiw Panoramasight turned out to be a sleeper

They've been complaining about most of their games, especially Western ones, since at the very least 2012

Square Enix cited sluggish sales and setbacks in various departments as the reason behind the revision, chief among them slower-than-expected sales of the now-rebranded Sleeping Dogs. Gamasutra reports that "sluggish" sales of arcade games from Square Enix subsidiary Taito, and the delay of Square's social games service, were also cited as factors in the revisions.

"In the case of Hitman, I personally love the game," he tells us. "I think it's very unique, but I always have to look at things from the perspective of what it costs us to develop it and the performance it delivers. In doing that, in the case of Hitman, we had several expectations where that balance was not sufficiently achieved.

Final Fantasy XVI failed to meet the high-end of Square Enix's sales expectations, according to company president Takashi Kiryu. As highlighted by Bloomberg, Kiryiu provided that assessment during a recent post-earnings call. He claimed slow adoption of the PlayStation 5 limited the game's performance, with Sony struggling to meet consumer demand due to supply issues during the console's first years on shelves.

none of their JP properties that aren't already blessed with sizeable budgets (FF, DQ, KH) would give them the results they want if they were to receive them, not just because they're all weird and niche and inherently resistant to the ensmoothification of the AAA machine but because S-E has already established that they can't even execute with big western franchises that were tailor-made for the approach they want to take
