the first Puyo Puyo Grand Prix kicks off in ~2hrs (13:45 start, Japan time): 32 pro-licensed players in a round-robin + double-elimination tournament, playing for ¥1M/300k/100k payouts for 1st/2nd/3rd+4th... iirc the winner of the last big official tournament played the whole thing standing up and needed the prize money to pay for hernia surgery:

aight so the big end-of-tournament reveal was... Puyo Puyo Grand Prix 2nd, scheduled for February 12 (of 2024, ignore the typo)

I was convinced for a long time that they'd have a new game queued up for 2/4/24 and I still don't think they're just going to let that date slide without doing something, but if they do have a new game ready to go then good lord are they cutting it fine

my hit rate is about as good as yours, but I swear they're going to reveal a game tonight. They really gotta announce something right about now if the Feb 24 release date is real, plus the weird Puyo Quest Twitter ads and the strange timing of this particular tournament

the way they market Puyo is so out of step with all their other games that I don't immediately assume they'll announce their new game at any of the events that might typically host a game announcement, but yeah, the clock's tickin'

my initial reaction to the Quest ads was that they're purely mistakes but the more I think about it, the more I worry that maybe their big 2/4 initiative will be PPQ English... like, that'd be insane, and the game is so obviously on its last legs in Japan that it makes no sense to not just wait until the successor game to try again in the west, but then again, if they're spinning their wheels on the next new game then maybe they can't manage anything else? I still don't actually think they'd do that, but I mean, they screwed up PSO2/NG the same way not that long ago so iunno

I'm honestly surprised the reveal wasn't the new game. They're cutting the 2024 game announcement really close, closer than Chronicle was iirc which was a few months in advance at TGS that year? maybe my memory is failing me. At this rate maybe we should expect the 2024 Puyo game to release around the same timeframe as Madou Monogatari 4 or something. My other hypothesis right now is that 2/4/2024 wouldn't be a release date, but instead an announcement date (which would be kind of weird)
