404 GAME RE:SET, the Yoko Taro-penned smartphone RPG/pretend-STG themed around a dystopian future where Sega wasn't a colossal fuck-up and anthropomorphised versions of all their series run amok, was an immediate and massive flop: it launched in April and is already scheduled to end on January 5, and I don't think anyone who played it is particularly surprised.
As one might expect from a Yoko Taro game, he's suffocating the life out of the game via a deluge of masturbatory, self-deprecating horseshit (the attached screenshot included actual in-house dev data that shows the game massively underperforming in all key areas), but I see a surprising amount of backlash to the shutdown: in addition to Taro's shtick getting old, a lot of diehards seem fed up with Sega leaning into their mythology about being ambitious underdogs who flew too close to the sun or whatever, whilst simultaneously not doing anything bold in the here and now, and that includes this game—not only is it not all that subversive, it's not even novel. Sega's been making these jokes since before they stopped making consoles!
