Japan's Daruma Dojo community just announced their 4th annual Daruma Dojo New Years get-together, which will include arcade-version tournaments, casuals, prize giveaways and more. The SFC port of this game became one of the surprise darlings of Japan's big RTA events, and the existing fanatics managed to parlay that attention into every-so-often meetups like these ones, and they've levelled up from a few SFC at someone's house to a fully-fledged arcade event, good for them.
What's also interesting is these events have the official endorsement of the original dev/publisher, Metro Corporation—that doesn't really mean a whole lot in practice, but it's nice that they have the sign-off, I suppose. (Metro's now a very large contract dev that works on the likes of Pokemon, so when they say they're too busy to negotiate a reissue of this weird old puzzle game, you can take them at their word.)
I was completely sidetracked over the weekend and forgot to check in on this, but here's the archive for the Daruma Dojo New Years Tournament 2024:
