...then you may want to try QUESTER, which launched in English today: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1754460/QUESTER/?l=english

This is a passion project by Thousand Games' Toshimichi Kuwahara, the founder of G-MODE and director/producer of a ton of games, big and small, produced during the galakei days, and as it turns out, the toolset they acquired via cranking out overachieving flip phone RPGs is extremely applicable to crafting economical retro faux-J-computer RPGs.

The setting and character/monster designs, as well as many of the illustrations, came from Bastard!! mangaka Kazushi Hagiwara, and the core direction/game design was handled by Hironori Kato, a long-time associate of Group SNE who's designed a ton of popular TCG/TRPG, including recent TRPG adaptations of Dark Souls and Elden Ring. The FM-style music's by Shigekuki Shimbo, another galakei alum who's most famous for handling the original tunes and classic arranges for Super Hero Sakusen, a PS RPG in the Super Robot Wars series that's packed with tokusatsu characters.

This game was essentially crowdfunded in Japan via paid beta access, and even the English version today was directly crowdfunded via kickstarter... they work quick, too, as that KS (which just barely hit its goal) only wrapped up a month ago, and here we are.

I'm not going to pretend like Quester's got the corporate-to-indie JP dev scene on its back or anything, but my hope is that it finds enough of an audience that the creators and companies/devs like theirs can find sustainable niches that let them exercise all the skills they cultivated as part of the machine, with guns to their heads and futons under their desks, but with games that they can make and sell on their own terms, that don't necessarily have to swallow decades of their lives per title.

...is in the works, with a Japanese crowdfunding campaign planned for later this month: https://kibidango.com/2446?content=main#itemContents 🇯🇵 All the same key staff have returned, and they don't intend to reinvent the wheel: they want to flesh out the character creation system, add some new battle mechanics, a canoe for water traversal, etc but it's all very iterative and I don't doubt they'll be able to deliver.
