Taito just announced the contents of Arcade Memories vol.2, the second 10-game SD card expansion for their mini arcade cabinet plug-and-play, the Egret II Mini. ICYMI, this was Taito's foray into the "mini" market, released early last year, and they tried to pitch it as a more higher-end, core-oriented product than competing systems via a focus on design features like the rotatable screen, abundance of peripherals, SD slot for firmware/content updates, etc—I don't think that market was especially satisfied with it, nor were the more casual fans happy to pay what Taito was charging for it, but it found just enough support for them to put out these game packs (in Japan; the intl distributor tapped out early), and I see a decent amount of excitement around this one.

Here's the trailer; read more for the infodump:

Everyone's talking about the wonderful Pizza Tower lately since it's such a well-designed Wario Land-style game with boatloads of personality, but I think people have been overlooking another great similar game that came out recently:

Curse Crackers: For Whom the Belle Toils!

It's a GBC-style platformer starring a circus acrobat girl and her living bell pet on a quest to get back at her kitsune necromancer lady nemesis, and god I loved every word of that premise. Since the game stars an acrobat, movement tech is delightfully smooth, varied, and well-animated while keeping within the visual constraints of GBC sprite work. The level layouts are loaded with secrets and alternate paths which can vary across visits - this game will absolutely scratch your Wario Land 3 itch, if you've been jonesing for something similar.

There's a ridiculous amount of lore for such a short game. The environments suggest so much about the world without saying it outright, and let you use your imagination to fill in the blanks. The character designs are so creative that it feels like every single character, regardless of importance, could be someone's OC - it's fun just to see who the character designers are going to come up with next.

I really hope this studio is able to continue along in its niche of making lovingly-crafted Game Boy Color-style games with lots of fresh ideas. Their debut Zeldalike game Prodigal had a similar look, and with Curse Crackers, they're proven they have range across genres. Best of luck to them!

But seriously, I wholeheartedly recommend Curse Crackers if you want a GBC-style platformer with satisfying movement tech, tons of secrets and mastery rewards, great character designs and a setting that's way more interesting than it has any right to be, and of course, cute furry girls.

Someone finally decided to see what would happen if Andy Bogard was given a pepeloogo, and we're all better off for it.

(You can absolutely haul ass through this game but it's mostly very accommodating towards being played at a slower pace, so don't be intimidated by all the speedrun-focused player-produced clips out there—think of it Wario Land 3 for impatient people, or something.)

nippon ichi software is releasing an actual new versus puzzle game called Yumeiro Yuramu (ゆめいろユラム) in the year twenty twenty three of the Common Era, and it actually looks kind of cool...! and it has cross-platform online (PS4/Switch) too!!

the demo drops at midnight, Aug 24 (JST) and will have online crossplay for a week. it will have offline modes as well which will still be available after the end of Aug. From the looks of things, I guess the online demo will only come to JP stores

(one cool rule that I didn't notice at first is that you can only send attacks immediately after creating a new yaku, so you need to think carefully about whether you want to make your attack now, or risk getting sniped before you can build your attack power even higher)

if this looks interesting to you, I'd recommend getting the demo asap—the online functionality of this demo is getting turned off in a week, and it's the kind of game that might take you a minute to grok
