when the hybrid laptop/dvd player demands HRT
i have no idea how i hit that checkbox but it's extremely funny and I would have left it on if I wasn't a coward
a machine running while he's holding its CPU in his hand could be a sex thing for someone.
I always loved how my family's first DVD player was full of greeblies and digits and buttons on the unit itself, the little number ticking up was satisfying. I would have loved this bit in particular of this laptop
The remote in the card slot just kills me. I adore that, it's so 2004
if a company wanted to offer something like that today it would be an app on your phone that uses bluetooth and you have to spend 20 minutes repeatedly deleting and rebuilding the pairing every time you open it
fascinated by the state of the windows install. i did not know it was even possible to remove the volume control. why would you do that?? HOW would you do that??
someone in comments suggested the previous user had run one of those fucking system cleaner programs and honestly, yeah, that would make a ton of sense. As far as I know those things are just shotguns that obliterate random or at least very poorly chosen files
"ask for it by name!" still a scathing burn from that 2004 dvd player review
Searching for the mainboard's model number "MS-10041" lead me to the name "MSI Megabook M610", which in turns leads to this machine: https://www.msi.com/Laptop/M610/Specification
So I'd guess it is in fact a rebranded MSI, and not an actual Averatech/Sotec design?
Edit, looked into the manual they've got available, looks like it matches what you've shown in the video; they call the DVD functionality "DVD Direct Play", btw
Weird that I couldn't find this during editing, but yeah, that does appear to be it. That said, we don't know whether this is a rebrand of the MSI, or the other way around.
Yeah, I just figured it'll be a rebrand of the MSI due to the mainboard's labeling and how I've seen plenty of parts from store brand systems, in particular Aldi Germany's Medion, that also have such MSI MS-xxxx markings, and I don't really expect ex. Aldi/Medion to have designed them. But there's really no 100% clear evidence either way, you're right.
in most cases I'd just go with the assumption that MSI designed it - here I'm only uncertain because sotec seeeeeems like they might have actually been doing some real work? but who knows
the hat saga continues
would you believe they still make portable DVD players new? they haven't changed, they still have composite video outputs and terrible ghosty screens with bad viewing angles. You can go into my work and get one on sale for £35
god that's just about right. and i mean, to be clear, I'm sure plenty of people still watch DVDs, it's just that bluray players can play them, so why do the DVD models still exist - but i'm certain the answer to that is very simple: a bluray chip costs $1, a DVD chip costs $0.15, or $0.05. or - and this is a theory i think about a lot - they cost that little in 2011, the last time one of these was actually made, and they're just still burning through the 500,000,000 they churned out over the decade prior.
Highlight of the video was when the DVD drive failed and you jumped back and then instead of looking at the thing you are touching that's making the weird noise, stare off into the corner of the room where I guess your monitor is because that's how brains work I guess...
I just remembered laptops used to have cd drives and I feel like I jumped timelines
