today I learned that there was a serious airline incident in 2020 (TUI flight 7226)... because of gendered honorifics

the airline used a system where passengers with "Miss" as an honorific were deemed "female children" and "Mrs" and "Ms" were deemed "female adults". they then used these as the sole determinant factor in approximating the weight of passengers aboard the flight... wow. just, wow.

so, a number of adults put "Miss" as their honourific, and in the weight calculations, were assigned child average weight (including luggage), resulting in a nearly 1.3 metric ton weight discrepancy

the flight had no actual problems, it took off and landed fine without anyone realising this had happened... but it was serious because weight affects flight in a lot of ways, and it apparently had an incident report written up for it because under different circumstances it could have been way worse or resulted in casualties

and the saddest part of this is they don't even try to get accurate weights for the sake of safety. they're airline corporations, of fucking course they only care about passenger weight because they want to minimise their fuel use (read: fuel expenses)

so this just takes the fucking cake. every time I hear something about allocishet society's bullshit gendering causing some incident, like gender reveal parties or whatever, I think "ok this is it. it can't get any more absurd than this." but I'm constantly proven wrong, again and again and again

My friends and I, excited about our plan to take down a plane with zero effort: "Miss, please"

It's okay, all the young boys who were entered as "Mr." and calculated as adult men canceled them out

(I have no idea if this is true but I do wonder how this system worked for boys/men; did they remember to check DOB for them or did they, continuing the 19th century theme, expect everyone would enter boys as "Master")
