TLDR: unity is 100% committed to the runtime fee, they claim their primary customers are happy with it, and they see mobile ad-monetized games as the primary audience for the game engine going forward.

I don't see anything here that suggests they understand why indies would be spooked, or that they've been displeased with the instability of the engine for a long time. This all amounts to a big, red, flashing "stay away" as far as I'm concerned.

I know it isn’t perfect or capable of doing every single thing Unity or unreal can do but i really think godot is the future for a lot of what Unity has been supporting for years.

I have only made half a finished game in it so far but the experience (comparing it to Unity or anything else I’ve used at this point) has been extremely positive for me, and it feels so much lighter weight/less brittle

Yeah, everyone I've talked to or seen talking about this is very "Godot is next." I was just talking with a friend about prototypes he wants to make on the side from his full-time design job, and he was saying how he'll have to learn Godot, and I kinda joked "is the Unity situation really that bad?" because I hadn't seen any news about it for a while, and wow, fuck, reading the above, yeah, OK, I also won't ever try Unity.

I wish Unreal could do 2d stuff well, it's all I've used for 8 years and I'm very good at it, but every time I have a 2d idea I'm like "well it's gonna be Unity because I don't have time to learn Godot," but I guess this is the nail in the coffin fully hammered in.

Yeah, fundamentally I don't expect it to take long to onboard to any modern game engine tbh, it's just more that I'm familiar with some nuances of Unity at least and really capitalizing on an engine ultimately requires a long-term investment to get to certain nuances. Either way, 8 years of 1 engine has made me such an expert that I fear ever changing because, you know, it'll take 8 years again to be that familiar with something. Granted, maybe something like Godot doesn't have a much to know about from the ground up since Unreal does have a truly messed up amount of features (a lot of which really only matter for AA or AAA dev).

Seriously? They jumped into a bonfire, lit themselves on fire and ran around like a headless chicken while everyone just stared at them.

They've barely put the flames out and they're already thinking about jumping into the bonfire again.

"Maybe it won't be so hot this time! I am smart!"

i think the reality today is that when it comes to unity or apple or google the only thing any of these companies care about is making sure they get a taste of the money mihoyo squeezes out of children and compulsive gamblers
