Writer and Critic.

Co-host of Safe Room, a survival horror game club podcast, and @TIEReview, a journal of independent games criticism.

I have many many criticisms of Feminist Frequency as a cultural entity and critical forum, but I am feeling a bit ~silly~ bout how much even base level feminism has vacated games crit. Feminist Frequency was imprecise, sometimes incurious, and over-reliant on tropes as an analytical framework, but it was also direct and clear! Able to call something misogyny, which no reviews of Stellar Blade seem actually willing to do. Even the more explicit criticisms of the game hedge and the reactionaries call them woke scolds anyway. Time was this would have gotten some heat in the "representation corner" of a polygon review, and now reviews don't even include that scrap. It's embarrassing.

I understand that there are a lot of factors that create this issue, but I think critics should consider doing their jobs.
