was chatting with @cass and @blep and talked about the idea to have a 'discovery tab' of sorts where you can specifically go to find new chosters and content a little bit outside of your usual sphere, filtered by tag, specifically intended to be 'intro post' and 'advertisement' type content for new people just finding you through this tab. think of it like an artists alley, for posting.

and you could pay Eggbug to be put in at the front of the alleyway. then people can come by to look and they will see you first. you could put commission posts or itch io links or whatever you want, and potentially they could be filtered by tags, etc like #gamedev or #background art. i think it would be better to keep monetization-powered content out of the normal tag search, though. keep it to the discover tab - separate from normal content, where everyone is aware that it is sponsored and is opting-in. this is a place where it would be nice to have one-click following for people without having to go to their profile too, a la tumblr.

also, to avoid the problems of Tumblr Blaze Catholicism, maybe have some degrees of separation slider you can set when searching or when creating your discovery ad, so your extremely niche content isn't going to people who will be extremely confused and possibly mad

testimonials:

"some tommy wiseau type person is just gonna pay 8000 bucks a month for 5 years to have their thing show up at the top
actually that would be a good thing wouldn t it" - @blep

anti-testimonials:

"[...] just reddit with paid upvotes"
"i would not use it [...]" - also @blep

While waiting for gifting and other purchasables on the site, I wonder if there's a way to do a completely user-driven version of this? Since cohost Plus! is currently the only way to pay staff anything, maybe it could serve as a short-term substitute?

Tags already provide an opt-in way for people to look for content.

With the honor system (especially if each post started with a cohost plus emoji as a way to validate that person has it) we could have people only post to #discovery once per month or something. Post too early and you're bound to be bumped from the first page by other posts later in the month. Post too late and the next month's people could bump you.

If you broke the rules, maybe people would complain in your comments?

The only downside is there currently isn't a way to share posts via tags without having the post show up in the home feed. That said, edits allow you to add tags to existing posts or change the contents of the posts entirely. It's kind of a lot of work, but you could repurpose a post from earlier in the month (so it's already off the home feed) and then tag it with whatever discovery tag would make it show up there? Oh, and add a :host-joy: while you're at it?
