It's been a week of a lot of slow but steady progress.

I finally finished up my taxes, which is not really very exciting, but it does free up some of my time and energy again.

On the next video front, I wrote a couple little scrapers to get Saturn release data from Redump and Satakore, so I now have a decent Saturn release list in spreadsheet form. I've also been continuing research and capturing footage for the first episode of Saturn Side. I even managed to crank out the rough script for a Gale Racer review. We're still a ways off from release, but this episode is coming along nicely!

My upcoming planned video release schedule (tentative):

  • Saturn Side 1, covering Sega Saturn releases for November-December 1994.
  • PlayStation Experiment 2, covering the remainder of PlayStation releases for December 1994.
  • The PC-FX Files 1, covering NEC PC-FX releases for December 1994-??? (not sure yet, but there aren't all that many PC-FX exclusives).
  • PlayStation Experiment 3, covering the beginning of PlayStation releases for 1995 (probably roughly January through March).

I may detour to do another unrelated video somewhere in there as well. I have a lot of smaller ideas bouncing around.

After doing a lot of Python and DevOps work last year and mostly just doing a bit of Python here and there so far this year, I'm starting to get back into Rust. I expect this will lead down the road of another project, but I'm not sure what form that will take! I do want to do some open source work this year, though, so that might nudge me towards a few ideas that would make sense to release as open source repositories.

in reply to @gretchenleigh's post:

okay so for some demented reason I got upset that auto-generated subs weren't available for The PlayStation Experiment 1, so I downloaded it and ran it through OpenAI Whisper as an experiment... I gotta say, for searchable transcript purposes, it's genuinely pretty good. For subtitle purposes, it needs work. The timings are terrible, it crams way too much into one sub and pushes the timings all the way to the middle of the first word of the next sub most of the time lol. YouTube's auto captions are horribly inaccurate but at least they're timed well. I started fixing it, and got 20 minutes into the video before going, dang, this is a ton of work, I've been at it most of the day. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say I spent four hours on it so far.

So uh, if you're at all interested in 20 minutes of slightly-amateurish hand tuned subs, and another hour and forty of some kinda terrible ones...let me know? lol

I may pick this back up some time, maybe finish this episode, but I don't think I'm gonna do this ever again, even though it was a little fun, unless I somehow end up with a lot of free time.

Also I'm really enjoying the video, btw, you really pile on the context but that's necessary for a complete retrospective, and you keep it moving! I know so much about the 2D-3D transition in arcade games now! Excited to see the rest of the series, I'd love their help in picking out which PSX games to catch up on haha

Oh wow, this is so amazing (and flattering)! Thank you! I did want to add subs, but as you've seen, they're quite labor-intensive to get right.

I would love to have your work so far, even if it's incomplete, so I can at least have a start. I would add your credits in the description with a link to you (let me know what you'd want to link back to).

I did also look into the automated subtitles thing, and I think I figured out what I needed to do to add them. I'm able to download an srt file with them now, but they aren't showing up in the video yet. It sometimes takes YouTube a while to do that kind of stuff, though; it's just recently that it finally picked up the chapter bookmarks I added.

Thank you again, I'm really humbled and grateful that folks are enjoying it so much.

Couldn't figure out a better solution than Pastebin but that should work just fine. (7 day timer on that download btw) I worked on it up to exactly the 20 minute mark, the end of the Virtua Racing section. I'd say as far as a transcript, the Whisper output is about 90% of the way there, it's really impressive what it does get, but it isn't perfect. I had to correct a bunch of names and slightly unclear phrases, including a couple that even I had to listen through a few times to get, hence why I wanted the subs in the first place haha. I also had to transcribe the Genesis commercial, which it skipped, and clean up some of the music tagging. The timings out of Whisper, as I noted, are kinda awful though, it dumps entire blocks of text on screen when most of the time you shouldn't dump more than a line unless doing so will get you the rest of the sentence or phrase, and it doesn't seem to have any respect for breaking on phrase boundaries. I'm pretty happy with the section I worked on but of course bits and pieces are up to interpretation so of course change anything you'd like.

just credit me as modulusshift, anybody who might want to reach me will find somewhere I have that name lol

I'm finally getting really satisfied with my PS1 setup, I've got a nice Trinitron TV with good speakers, I'm feeding in a clear, bright signal from the PS1, it's the kind of experience I always wanted when I was sitting in front of a 9 inch CRT and my PSOne as a kid haha, lots of Rollcage Stage 2. So I'm taking the chance to visit some titles I used to see in my brother's old collection and checking out a few others along the way.

Hey, are you going to talk about the neGcon controller? I didn’t even realize until recently that the original Ridge Racer had analog support, since it obviously can’t look ahead to the Dual Analog and Dual Shock.
