Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari 🥺

Another doomed Sega Saturn latecomer, Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari once again thrives in its creative splendor. The side-scrolling puzzle game has some of the most gorgeous illustrations on the platform, teetering between wholesome and bizarre, with only a touch of that CD-i feel. Sadly, the developer would also dissolve after this final release. Director Keita Amemiya, however, would pivot into creating the Garo TV series.

The creators were, rightfully, so sure of their craft that the game even came with a Premium CD for just the artwork, which is found in this Tumblr post.

Yeah this game is bizarrely beautiful. It’s very cool that it exists. My compatriot Lacquerware did a playthrough of it on his Twitch channel and did an informal live translation of it. It’s a neat story, written very poetically, about the protagonist trying to find his lost friend.

Probably worth noting that Keita Amemiya was originally a TV and film guy. He's both a director and concept artist for quite a few tokusatsu series, including the smash hit sentai series Jetman. He only started working on games once his career there was firmly established; I only mention it because his shift to Garo was less of a pivot and more of a return to form for him.
