Hakuhou, the ex-Fromsoft dev who's been working at the fringes of official and unofficial Wizardry dev for years, has just released their first commercial Wiz-like on early access: NYAZ: Kobayashi-san chi Nottori Keikaku, a cat-themed take on classic/Gaiden-style Wiz that sands off a lot of the edges: you're not going to be surprised by brutal enemies; exp rates are quite generous; escaping battles and opening chests are much more forgiving, etc. The translation's not great but if you have any familiarity with Wiz 1 through 5, you'll be good... the systems are near-identical to the recently-remastered Wizardry Gaiden: The Five Ordeals, even.

The cat theme isn't merely a cloying veneer, either: the theme and basic plot of the game were inspired by Hakuhou's recent experiences with an adopted cat, the trials of acclimatising it to their home and their other fostered cat and the subtle ways that cats reshape the orbits of their "owners" to suit their own purposes, as reflected by the game's theme song. (DISCLAIMER: I see a 432Hz tag on that video, so apologies in advance if it ends up polluting your recommends with conspiracy horseshit.)

For the curious, Hakuhou's recent productions include the browser/smartphone Wiz clones NIZ and MIZ, which include officially-licensed character portraits from Tamaki Ishagaki's Wizardry Gaiden manga, and certain popular expansions for The Five Ordeals, including contributions to official content and a brand-new episode produced specifically for the new remaster. If you want to go back even further, they were the lead programmer on a bunch of the PS2-era Armored Core games.

Huh, this looks very cute. Managing to balance the real Wizardry systems while being gentler doesn’t sound like an easy job.

Really unfortunate about the AI backgrounds though

yyyyyeah... tbh the tiresome nature of talking AI ethic with certain doujin folk has basically numbed me to AI use; I'll push back against it with people I know will at least hear it out, but good god is it exhausting
