i’ve seen a couple videos about the “holo tile” which is basically an omnidirectional conveyor belt for applications like vr and stuff. and it’s super impressive imo. i wondered how they made them in a way that they can apply so much force

and just now i saw a short that doesn’t explain how it works, BUT they show close-ups! and, assuming i understand what’s going on here (not an engineer), it’s so clever! it’s a bunch of spinning disks (which is good because you can transfer all the torque from your motor directly to the disk) that angle themselves so you only make contact with the edge of the disk. that way they apply a linear force to push you along
