The more engineers I talk to outside Silicon Valley (who are already miffed that computer programmers get to call themselves software engineers), the more I share their resentment that the term “tech industry” largely refers to either people who make websites or people who manufacture semiconductors.
I have tremendous respect for the people who run radio towers and internet trunk lines, maintain power plants and power substations, write the code for networks of traffic lights and hydraulic presses and sewers, who keep the databases for dental records and the supply chains for grocery stores and the archives of libraries in working order. Without this tech and these people behind it, your shitty multimillion dollar VC funded last mile smartphone webapp is meaningless.
(And for some reason seemingly all of the people who run all that backbone of civilization tech are furries)
