I think I might try making a crossword

graham

Update, there are several difficult parts I've found while trying to make a crossword puzzle:

  1. Words must be at least 3 letters long in each direction
  2. I want to pick words that in some way relate back to my interests, hobbies, beliefs, etc
  3. The "don't go beyond X by Y size" rule is a bigger constraint than I had realized
  4. Proper nouns and multi-word phrases are not something I have much affinity for, compared to regular individual words
  5. I keep running out of S and H pieces in my bananagrams set

Perhaps tomorrow I'll try again with some webapp, now that I've gotten a little bit of a feel for things

Update: thanks to @topghost's recommendation to use crosshare.org's tools, I have now completed a midi (11x11) crossword board and just need to create the hints. I am happy with all but two or three of the words, which seems pretty good for a first attempt.

I'll plan on submitting to puzzmo once the submission form opens this upcoming week. No idea on whether it'll be accepted, but it'd be pretty cool on a number of levels if it did.

Wow, hints seem way easier to make than putting the letters in the boxes!

If you're interested in helping me playtest, and you promise not to share the link with anyone, please let me know in my asks! I'd appreciate any help I can get

Thanks to various folks for helping playtest, to @topchost @topghost for suggesting crosshare.org as a resource, and thank you in advance if you end up playing it!

Woah congrats!!!! This probably says something about how my mind works but this post immediately made me wonder how hard it would be to build a crossword generator (like, taking a list of words and putting them in the boxes)

Solved in 09:02! Helps that we have a lot of overlapping interests. Have you read Saint-Exupéry's adult works? They're very good, and deserve to be better known!

Thanks Jae! I can't believe it randomly ended up being on your birthday. I hope you know I did the "push the anime glasses up the nose and smirk" thing when I read your "we just have to figure out how to tell people about Cohost beyond word of mouth" last month, knowing this was already slated to come out in May

this was really fun! i don't ever do crosswords so it took me almost 30 mins... i got stuck on 27 down for a bit because i was just kind of guessing at queer identities. there are enough with 3 letters that i got mixed up multiple times lol. my favourite was 28 across because it's fun to say and was one of my plonks

Good puzzle! Really good density, nice open grid. Fun and innovative cluing, and I was really convinced that 24A was going to be "CROSSWORDS" :D The northwest and southeast corners are quite isolated, having only a single (long!) word that connects them to the rest of the grid, but that's more than appropriate for a Friday. Difficulty-wise I'd put it closer to a Tuesday or Wednesday -- the clues are straightforward while some answers are slightly more obscure -- but I don't know how much consistency puzzmo has had on that front.

Thank you! I hope you had fun. I think I probably won't do a puzzle of this same shape again any time soon. I agree that the corners are pretty isolated and there aren't any long down clues.

It's funny you mention difficulty! I wound up having friends and some folks on cohost do some playtesting earlier on and some of the notes I got included it being "too easy." I'm not sure what puzzmo's difficulty curve looks like over the week either.

i think i remember somebody saying in the discord at some point that puzzmo doesn't have a weekly difficulty curve for crosswords! puzzles are mostly easy-ish but harder ones do show up occasionally, just not on a set schedule

Hell yeah! That was super fun! I really liked your clues. They're always more fun when they're personal, but I also loved the moment of "oh!" I got on 8 across "It comes from the heart." Fantastic, and thank you :)

Thank you!! I was really happy with how many personal answers and clues managed to wind up in the final version. Even stuff like 20D which was added after some revisions and which is a pretty "normal" answer managed to have some cluing that is sentimental to me

i like plonks cause a) i am not fast (even when i feel fast) b) it’s like a puzzle in a puzzle.

i imagine it’s wild to see the sub minute solves! even though there’s only two rn

I feel the same way! I plonkmax sometimes for sure

And yeah, I feel like those might be suss. I didn't have to read any of the clues and my time was double that? Like sure I paused for maybe twenty seconds in the middle, but still... :host-nervous:
