I place pixel on bitmap and like tabletop rpgs

wanted to do this because i realized how unwieldy and complicated FFXIV's zone connections are as of the current xpac, and how basically nobody ever uses them more than once. here a link between nodes indicates that you can go from one to the other either by walking through a point on the map or interacting with a character / object. airship links are not included, since they would make the map much worse. i include a node on this graph if it appears in the list of "zones" on the wiki, UNLESS it is a small, dead-end zone where no combat happens (like inn rooms, the waking sands, throne rooms in capital cities) OR if it is a zone that you can only access during certain quests. it is not a perfect classification. but there's so many fucking zones.

phenomena:

  • longest path is 17 zones i think (from mare lamentorum to gangos)
  • limsa to western thanalan is a single link that connects two halves of the graph. if not for that then it would be impossible to get from one side to the other
  • it's frustratingly almost possible to display this as a planar graph with no self-intersections, but there's exactly two ferry links that make this impossible - gridania to lavender beds, and western la noscea to lower la noscea.

i think it is fun to try to figure out which areas of the graph correspond to which areas in-game just from the topology. labeled graph under the readmore (includes mild spoilers for dawntrail in the form of zone names)

this is really cool! i'd wondered what a graph like this would look like, it's a neat structure that kind of gets lost if you only travel by aetheryte... it's interesting seeing how interconnected arr zones are vs how tree-like later ones are!

super helpful and neat visualization, especially if this is the sort of way that some folks find it easier to see\visualize these connections. I personally find it helpful to be able to see this in front of me and use it to gauge distances for Return points: there's a lot of tools to help get around the world, and (depending on what you are trying to accomplish) this can help figure out ways to cut down on the time that you spend traveling from one place to another.

Thank the gods we don't have to walk everywhere.

this is really neat! I also totally got got by the fact Old Sharlayan goes to Labyrinthos and THEN Ultima Thule, I entirely forgot that you could even get there despite doing the end of Endwalker like not even a month ago...

Finally got around to finishing up my attempt at labeling the blank map.
Sadly, I feel the need to be the rando who shows up to say "you're wrong" about a couple things. (Which is to say, I really enjoyed this)

The Interdimensional Rift is only accessible during the Omega quests.

Empyreum connects to Foundation through the Aetheryte Plaza and the gatekeep in The Brume. It also connects to The Firmament, which is missing from the map and connects to Foundation at the same points.

I think the bit that threw me off the most was the fact that the Syrcus Trench connects to The Ocular. All I could keep thinking of was the start of the expansion where we get dumped in Lakeland. (and trying to remember which La Noscea was which)

i didn't include the firmament because I thought it was not technically a zone - for some reason I thought it was a Duty? or something similar. Like, it does not abide by the rules of normal zones: if you are world visiting and try to access it it will often say that it is too congested, or something like that. in my mind it was more like Eureka or something. the wiki calls it a "location" and not a zone, whatever that means

but you're definitely right about the interdimensional rift and the empyreum! didn't even check those. Thought I just knew

Yeah, they had to do some emergency restrictions to keep World Visitors out of The Firmament because people were getting locked out of the progression events happening on their own world and they never rolled those back. Ishgardian Restoration was a bit of a mess and unless you or a friend were invested in it back then, I can see it being easy to tuck away and forget about.

BTW, did you make these in a graphics editor, or did you use some sort of node mapping program?
