and UGH i SO DEARLY WISH i could recommend GaoGaiGar to literally everybody without reservation!!!! i firmly believe it's just out and out some of the Best and Most Fun you can get with giant robots, it's such an absolutely wonderful watch. Gai Shishioh is absolutely one of my top anime men - he's hot and i'm love (and also he's Link Ocarinaoftime and Shiro Gundam08thmsteam! that's gotta count for something!!). it's just so fully embracing of being Hot Blooded and Being Badass and Trusting Others.

... but unfortunately, it is also incredibly laden with rapid flashing to the point where it's straining even for me (generally not particularly photosensitive). watching GaoGaiGar is also a very good reminder why regulations on strobing were tightened. ever since watching it i have come to appreciate dimming in anime. if you are safe enough taking it, i still do absolutely wholeheartedly recommend it!!!! just... stay safe, also

in reply to @gull's post:

"Oh yeah, I loved GaoGaiGar," I say while hoping I don't have to explain how I was holding a hand up in front of the screen every time the Zondar were doing their evil plotting.

I sometimes wonder to what extent in the original viewing experience relatively small CRT screens moderated the effect, in GGG and in other titles (Utena and Giant Robo spring to mind).

But that's not really to defend the choice, and yeah, the outcome is that GaoGaiGar is a great show that people should tread very carefully around if they have any photosensitivity at all…

Has anyone ever put out some kind of software (not necessarily realtime) that detects these and like, freezes the frame until it stops/just blacks out the frame? I'm not photosensitive to my knowledge (and maybe this is a super solved problem already?) but it seems like it should be at least possible to preprocess a video for this kind of thing, especially since the flashing is probably forcing a burst of keyframe encodings to happen...

Hmm...

I realize this is months after you posted this but I just started watching GGG and Jesus Christ the strobe lighting is unbearable in parts.

It distracts from the entire experience which is otherwise really fantastic. I genuinely wonder why they made this design decision because it must have been obvious at the time that it was difficult to watch.

I would absolutely love if someone were to make a GGG without strobing version (kind of like the people who made Mythbusters without the filler lmao)
