i love bad (quality) bad (review-conclusion) reviews of things i like. i derive a pleasure from seeing someone so completely and utterly miss the point. the IGN review of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky is one of my favorite video game reviews of all time - not because it's a good bad review or anything, but because it's so absurdly just A Guy That Does Not Actually Want To Review This Game On Its Own Level that it gets so much wrong or otherwise off that it's absolutely fucking hilarious to me.

this post is not about that review, though, it's about this review of Turn A Gundam on MyAnimeList. this is one of those reviews where i read it and wonder if we even watched the same show, or indeed even the same franchise. like i'm sorry that it didn't ring true for you, mon frere, but... you want more 'military accuracy' in a show where what may as well be Magical Moon Giants wreak havoc against world war 1-level tech?? gundam is about well-unified nations?? nothing at all happens until halfway through??? there's no interesting action or mech combat??? Loran Cehack is less interesting than motherfucking Shinn Asuka??????? like... it feels like this guy watched a different show yknow

and that is what keeps drawing me back to it. this review makes zero sense, to me. it feels like someone fell asleep during the entire show and had a bad dream about it. this review feels Wrong in a very specific way and i am compelled

in reply to @gull's post:

it's compelling and enjoyable the way a particular kind of bad movie is. if ever i were to be shot into space and held prisoner aboard a satellite with robot friends i would want to be sent these kinds of reviews to riff on

"The plot seems like a drab retelling of a post-apocalyptic Gundam Wing as told by the recently lobotomized. As the only emotions really expressed are rage, desperation, and, oh yeah, angst, Gundam X strikes me as being just as anti-Gundam as Gundam Wing was, but in a different way. Gundam X focuses on nothing but despair...and as such, fails utterly to keep this reviewer's interest. Whereas Gundam, though at times saddening, was exciting, suspenseful, and full of life, Gundam X is completely bleak and inhuman, and loses the point that Gundam is actually less about the mecha than about humanity itself. Then again, when neither the mecha or the humans inspire anything ... why should we care?"

just speechless at how much is just factually incorrect and also gross about this i had to talk myself out of becoming a wikipedia editor and removing it

i just went and read it myself before you sent this. you were right to not be strong enough, i dont even know if i am. this is some of the most violently incorrect anime review ive seen. i feel queasy reading this. GX is like, the polar opposite of brooding - it is possibly some of the most Fun Weekly Adventure gundam gets. this show is literally so much about people looking to the future and trying to make a better world, so about being human and moving on from your past to be better. it is a show that balances complicated and nuanced characters just trying to get by with the very intentional feeling low-complication ofTwo Boys That Openly Laugh To Each Other About How Evil They Are and The Man In Charge Of The Feddie Remnants LITERALLY Named 'Lord Blood Man'. i do not know what show this reviewer was watching

On the one hand, Hilariously Bad Reviews can be really funny. Thats basically the reason why I keep my ear to the ground for certain Rancid Gaming Personalities takes on games because their logic for hating games can be out there in ways you can't help but pick apart.

On the other hand theres the bad ones that somehow gain traction in a fanbase somehow and stains the discourse for years to come. Thats happened multiple times over as an SU fan and it fucking sucks.

su really got hit with all the worst of it huh. it really continues to skew the tone of conversation toward attack and defense all these years later even in a world long after the Wacky Hiatus Schedule kicked tempers into overdrive, something which is now at best a historical curiosity and at worst an old shame that shouldn't still have the kind of mark it does

Its so wild that all the controversy is propped up on one personality that refuses to let their hate of the show go

Even other cartoon YT'ers that didn't like the show apologized for overblowing their problems with the show or even defending the show nowadays from all the negative memes/shitposts but that one person continues to crusade against the show and its creators like they killed their dog or something.

i ain't naming names but if you know you fucking know

Sometimes you see a take that's just so utterly incomprehensible you take psychic damage and can only hope the poster is actually from another universe where the show was completely different. Like the person who hated Kamen Rider OOO because "Eiji is a rich kid and could suck it up and call his dad to bail him out at any time."

this is what it feels like - there is some alternate universe where some shows are bafflingly Different and Worse, and all the shows they get compared against are also bafflingly Different, and these people are some kind of incursion from that universe
